Project Description :
Relocate or Renovate The Client Story
To relocate or to renovate is a question often posed to Pinnacle; this was the case with these Signal Hill clients in SW Calgary. The question of course is; will the renovation investment be worth it all in the end…both from an ROI perspective as well as providing an increased level of elegance, sophistication and enhanced living spaces for the family? After careful planning including budget & project scope, Pinnacle was able to provide our client a complete main floor and basement renovation that met the both the design and budget criteria, while addressing the family’s desire for a dramatic makeover.
Our client’s had purchased their home as a new home some 14 years earlier. The kitchen was an extremely cramped and isolated area offering little opportunity for entertaining while cooking. The entry to the formal dining room was a significant distance from the kitchen, the family room was closed off and isolated as well…simply stated, the main floor needed an update.
Although a theater room had been implemented a short time prior to Pinnacle’s involvement, the balance of the basement area (which incidentally provided direct access to the garage) had never been developed. As an avid golfing family there was a specific request for golf bag storage in the lower level area; in addition, our clients desired a 3-piece bath, storage lockers and; last but not least…a games room for their teenage daughters.
The Pinnacle Solution
Partnering with a local architectural-design firm along with Pinnacle’s in-house interior designer, the process of incorporating our client’s wishes began. In the case of this client, Pinnacle’s involvement began at the design stage, through to complete project management, color staging, product selections, and even included items as far-reaching as window coverings and furnishings.
In order to capture the square footage required for this client’s desire for an entertainment-inclusive kitchen, a 5’-0” addition was added along the back of the home; complete with a roof design that covered the rear-door patio landing. This access now leads to a wonderful, newly landscaped back yard and patio area (recently completed by the clients).
The additional square footage added to the rear of the home now provided Pinnacle the opportunity to completely re-orient the kitchen. The new design allowed for a fabulous single-level island incorporating a 4-person eating bar area, veggie-sink and wine display. The kitchen cabinetry, (finished in Toffee finished Maple complete with two-toned colour to the island) was further enhanced with under-cabinet task lighting, double-edge granite counters along with a full-wrap ceramic tile backsplash.
The ‘closed in’ feeling on the main floor was dealt with by eliminating the bearing walls; in their place; engineered, full-span, flush-beams were installed to support the second storey through the kitchen and family room areas. Removing an enclosed stairway wall, and the existing flooring, gave way to new wood & wrought-iron railings to the upper floor, as well as a complete main floor installation of custom-stained oak hardwood.
Removing the bearing walls to the family room now leads the eye from the front foyer…through the family room, to the stunning new kitchen beyond; now framed by a pair of stately site-built columns. All doors, baseboards and window casings were updated to a deep-cut profile; fitly framing each new door and window opening. To enhance the front foyer visuals, the dated bi-fold closet doors were replaced with a set of double-passage doors, classic lever locksets and friction-fit roller catches, complete with custom split-access shelving. Stepping in the front door, your eye is also carried up to a ceiling cornice justly enveloping the entire foyer with another heightened level of elegance.
Drawn from the front foyer into the formal living and dining room by the soaring vaulted ceiling, your eyes are carried to a strategically placed art niche complete with halogen puck lighting, along with classic cornice moulding running full length of the open second-floor stairway visible from below. The doorway to the formal dining room now is placed directly adjacent to the kitchen allowing perfect access. Formal family dinners can now be managed with ease since the newly renovated gourmet kitchen is mere steps away.
The basement area demanded a complete re-configuration of the back door/garage entry and a re-design of the existing bath area to comply with new building code requirements. The existing electrical panel required re-positioning as well to allow for the new design. Once the code requirements were met, Pinnacle went to work bringing the lower level alive.
The new 3-piece bath was installed along with ceramic tile flooring; the flooring tile now stretches beyond the bath…through the entire entry area as well. Pinnacle suggested in-floor heat in the tile areas allowing for bare-feet comfort in the bath, but also allowing wet footwear to dry quickly on the heated tile in the entry area. Lockers were added for the entire family including custom golf lockers complete with personal placement compartments for each family member’s golf equipment. The games room and access hallways were given ample lighting with strategically placed pot lights throughout, adding the final touch to a very personal lower level development for this family.
Pinnacle’s involvement with this project was very gratifying quite simply because of this client’s willingness to specifically define their family’s requirements; the resulting finished product stemmed in large part to this open dialogue from the very first meeting. Pinnacle then simply went to work interpreting their needs to produce the desired living spaces for the entire family to enjoy.
“We had a very positive renovation experience with the Pinnacle Group. Paul and his staff and trades were courteous and professional, and our project was completed on schedule. We are now planning phase 2 of our home renovation – with Pinnacle, of course!”
